Taking the SAT as a Sophomore

Does anyone have thoughts on taking the SAT as a sophomore? I haven’t had any experience with the SAT but I was thinking the best way to practice would be to take a real exam and see how I do.

I’m taking it as a sophomore, but I have been studying since I was in eighth grade. I think taking it as a sophomore is advantageous because you can get an idea of your strengths and weaknesses under real testing conditions and then properly study from there. It also gives you an extra year to prepare and get the score you are aiming for.

Most people take the SAT around 2-3 times, so it would be best not to waste an attempt as a sophomore. Also, some schools ask you to send all of your SATs you’ve ever taken so it’s not like you can hide a bad score.

I took the SAT as a sophomore and found it to be very helpful and worthwhile as a starting point. However, when I took it my junior year I found that I knew a lot more just from taking harder classes and I made less mistakes.

I think you should take it. You’re going to have to take it eventually so might as well get started early and determine how to begin studying.

If you are looking to take the SAT as a sophomore simply to gain exposure to the exam, don’t do it that would be a complete waste of time. If you are taking it to be done testing as soon as possible then yeah go for it but make sure you prepare.

If you want solid practice, there are tons of official released SATs to study from. I would complete a few of those all the way through and study them before sitting for the real deal.

You should definitely have done some studying before sitting for an entire SAT. If you aren’t hitting your goal on practice exams, then you should wait until your junior year when you are more prepared. Taking the SAT without any experience is not good practice, it’s pretty discouraging.

If you have already taken algebra 2 and geometry then you should be fine as a sophomore. At my school, they advised taking these classes before attempting the SAT because many of the concepts from algebra 2 and geometry appear on the exams.

You should be fine then. Maybe review some geometry for the math section. Also I used College Panda for grammar and that really saved me.

Definitely take it but make sure you prep. If you end up doing well, you are done with the SAT forever and can spend more time on classes and EC’s your junior and senior year. And if you don’t do well, then you know exactly what you need to work on for the future. There is no downside to taking it as a sophomore IMO.
