Test Details

The AP United States Government and Politics exam will consist of 2 online free response questions. The total time for the exam will be 45 minutes. The test is open note and open book. Read more about the College Board's academic integrity policy.

Time on the exam will be divided between two questions. Each question will have a 5 minute upload period for students to submit their work. After a student submits their work for the first question, they will not be able to return back to it.

Argument Essay

Question #1
Time: 25 minutes
Weight: 60%

Question 1 assesses students’ ability to do the following:

  • Articulate a defensible claim or thesis that responds to the question and establishes a line of reasoning
  • Provide evidence from 1 of the foundational documents listed in the question to support the claim
  • Provide evidence from a second foundational document, or from knowledge of course concepts, to support the claim
  • Use reasoning to explain why both pieces of evidence support the claim
Concept Application

Question #2
Time: 15 minutes
Weight: 40%

Question 2 presents students with an authentic scenario, and assesses students’ ability to do the following:

  • Explain the effects of a political institution, behavior, or process
  • Transfer understanding of course concepts and apply them in a new situation or scenario
